Vein Treatments Available in Monterey Bay

Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan based on a diagnostic ultrasound. Because every patient’s vein anatomy is different, our board-certified surgeons serving Santa Cruz, Salinas, Watsonville, and the greater Monterey Bay area select the right combination of treatments for your specific condition, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

ClosureFast™ Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

The ClosureFast procedure — formerly known as the VNUS Closure procedure — uses radiofrequency energy delivered through a slender catheter to heat and permanently seal the diseased vein. Controlled RF energy contracts the collagen in the vein wall, causing it to collapse. Blood is naturally rerouted to healthy vessels. It is our most frequently performed treatment for varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. Most patients at our Salinas office complete the procedure in under an hour and return to normal activities the same day. Clinical studies confirm superior long-term effectiveness with less pain and bruising than laser ablation. More information

VenaSeal™ Closure System

VenaSeal is the only non-thermal, non-tumescent, non-sclerosant vein closure procedure. A medical-grade adhesive is delivered endovenously to seal the diseased vein from within — without heat or chemical irritants. This approach eliminates the risk of nerve injury associated with some thermal procedures, particularly when treating the small saphenous vein. Because it requires no tumescent anesthesia, patients avoid the discomfort of multiple needle sticks during treatment. Clinical studies confirm the procedure is safe and effective. More information

Asclera® Sclerotherapy

Asclera is an FDA-approved injectable treatment used to eliminate spider veins and small varicose veins. The solution is carefully injected directly into the affected vein, causing it to close and gradually be absorbed by the body. The treatment is performed in-office with minimal discomfort and little to no downtime. It is widely used for cosmetic improvement of visible veins and also helps improve overall vein health and circulation in treated areas. More information

Stab Phlebectomy

Stab phlebectomy — also called microphlebectomy or ambulatory phlebectomy — is a minimally invasive technique used to remove bulging varicose veins that lie just beneath the skin. Through tiny puncture incisions (typically 1–3 millimeters), our surgeons gently extract the diseased vein segments using specialized hooks. The incisions are so small they usually require no sutures and heal with little to no scarring. Stab phlebectomy is often performed in combination with vein ablation procedures to address both the underlying source and the visible bulging veins in a single treatment session. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and most patients return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. More information

Ligation of Perforators

Perforator veins connect the superficial venous system near the skin to the deep venous system within the muscles. When these connecting veins become incompetent, they can contribute to varicose veins, skin changes, and venous ulcers. Ligation of perforators is a targeted procedure performed under ultrasound guidance to identify and seal these problematic perforator veins. Depending on size and location, perforators may be treated with endovenous techniques (laser, radiofrequency, or sclerotherapy) or surgical ligation through a small incision. This procedure is particularly important for patients with advanced venous disease, including those with venous ulcers or recurrent skin changes that have not responded to other treatments. Aesthetic Option

Once the medical aspects of your venous disease have been addressed, we offer aesthetic options to refine the appearance of any remaining small veins, including fine spider veins (telangiectasias) and reticular veins beneath the surface. Aesthetic treatments may involve cosmetic sclerotherapy or other minimally invasive techniques tailored to your specific concerns. While these treatments are typically not covered by insurance since they are considered cosmetic, they can significantly improve the appearance of your legs and complement the medical treatments you have received. We discuss aesthetic options with you during your follow-up visits, after the medical priorities have been addressed. More information

Yes, when vein treatments are medically necessary, they are typically covered by many major insurance plans, including CCAH, Medicaid, Medicare, Blue Shield, Blue Cross, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare. Coverage varies by plan, and our team will verify your specific insurance benefits before your appointment. Purely cosmetic treatments, such as spider vein sclerotherapy, are generally not covered.

Most patients who receive minimally invasive vein treatments are able to walk out immediately after the procedure and return to normal daily activities the same day. Strenuous exercise is typically restricted for about two weeks. Your surgeon will give you a clear recovery plan before you leave the office.

Most patients do not need a referral. You can contact any of our Santa Cruz, Salinas, or Watsonville offices directly to schedule a consultation. If your insurance plan requires a referral, our team will let you know when verifying your benefits before your appointment.

Both procedures permanently close diseased veins, but they use different techniques. ClosureFast™ uses controlled radiofrequency energy delivered through a catheter to heat and seal the diseased vein. VenaSeal™ uses a medical-grade adhesive, no heat, no tumescent anesthesia, and no risk of thermal nerve injury. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your specific vein anatomy and diagnostic ultrasound findings.
